Do You Need Orthotics?

Shoe inserts that are designed to help relieve pain for a variety of foot conditions (including corns and calluses, tendonitis, bunions, heel pain, and recurring stress fractures) are known as orthotics. Orthotics can be made from various materials, such as rubber, plastic, leather, and in some cases, even metal. Podiatrists often make custom orthotics to treat specific issues. Podiatrists customize orthotics by accounting for the biomechanics of the foot as well as the function and structure of the foot. Patients who are struggling with pain in their feet may wish to consult a podiatrist who can prescribe custom orthotics that are specific to your foot.

If you are having discomfort in your feet and would like to try orthotics, contact Frank Henry, DPM from Marble Falls, TX. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Are Orthotics?

Orthotics are inserts you can place into your shoes to help with a variety of foot problems such as flat feet or foot pain. Orthotics provide relief and comfort for minor foot and heel pain but can’t correct serious biomechanical problems in your feet.

Over-the-Counter Inserts

Orthotics come in a wide variety of over-the-counter inserts that are used to treat foot pain, heel pain, and minor problems. For example, arch supports can be inserted into your shoes to help correct overarched or flat feet, while gel insoles are often used because they provide comfort and relief from foot and heel pain by alleviating pressure.

Prescription Orthotics

If over-the-counter inserts don’t work for you or if you have a more severe foot concern, it is possible to have your podiatrist prescribe custom orthotics. These high-quality inserts are designed to treat problems such as abnormal motion, plantar fasciitis, and severe forms of heel pain. They can even be used to help patients suffering from diabetes by treating foot ulcers and painful calluses and are usually molded to your feet individually, which allows them to provide full support and comfort.

If you are experiencing minor to severe foot or heel pain, it’s recommended to speak with your podiatrist about the possibilities of using orthotics. A podiatrist can determine which type of orthotic is right for you and allow you to take the first steps towards being pain-free.

What Is Peripheral Neuropathy?

The brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system, which, under normal circumstances, communicates with other parts of the body through the peripheral nervous system. When nerves within the peripheral nervous system become damaged and interrupt the complex messaging system with the central nervous system, this is known as peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy can be caused by diabetes, injury, autoimmune diseases, vascular issues, infections, certain medications, and other diseases. Peripheral neuropathy can cause stabbing or shooting pain, numbness, cramping, burning, weakness, prickling, and tingling in the feet and hands. It can also manifest as extreme sensitivity to touch, lack of coordination or clumsiness. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist, who can diagnose and help to manage peripheral neuropathy in the lower extremities.

Neuropathy

Neuropathy can be a potentially serious condition, especially if it is left undiagnosed. If you have any concerns that you may be experiencing nerve loss in your feet, consult with Frank Henry, DPM from Marble Falls, TX. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment for neuropathy.

What Is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.

Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:

  • Numbness
  • Sensation loss
  • Prickling and tingling sensations
  • Throbbing, freezing, burning pains
  • Muscle weakness

Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.

Treatment

To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.

Pain medication may be issued for pain. Electrical nerve stimulation can be used to stimulate nerves. If the neuropathy is caused from pressure on the nerves, then surgery may be necessary.

Handle With Care: What to Do if You Break Your Toe

A broken toe can be a potentially serious injury. A toe bone can break either partially or fully, causing symptoms such as severe pain, tenderness, inflammation, and bruising. In some cases, the toe may become deformed due to a bone being knocked out of place. Broken toe treatment depends on the severity of the injury, but you should rest the injured toe. Your doctor may tape the broken toe to the toe next to it or give you a device to stabilize the injured toe while it heals. In cases of severe injury, surgery may be needed. You should always get medical attention right away if the broken bone pokes through the skin, if the affected foot is numb or cold, or if there are signs of infection. For more information about how to handle a broken toe, please consult with a podiatrist.

Broken toes may cause a lot of pain and should be treated as soon as possible. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Frank Henry, DPM from Marble Falls, TX. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is a Broken Toe?

A broken toe occurs when one or more of the toe bones of the foot are broken after an injury. Injuries such as stubbing your toe or dropping a heavy object on it may cause a toe fracture.

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

  • Swelling
  • Pain (with/without wearing shoes)
  • Stiffness
  • Nail Injury

Although the injured toe should be monitored daily, it is especially important to have a podiatrist look at your toe if you have severe symptoms. Some of these symptoms include worsening or new pain that is not relieved with medication, sores, redness, or open wounds near the toe.

The Consequences of Hammertoe

Hammertoe is a common foot deformity in which one or more of the smaller toes bends upward at the middle joint, giving the toe a hammer-like shape. This deformity is caused by an imbalance between the intrinsic and extrinsic muscles surrounding the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints in the toes. Hammertoes are not just unsightly, they can also be painful. The tops of the toes may rub against your shoes while you walk, causing the toes to become callused. The irregular shape of the toes can make it difficult to find comfortable, well-fitting shoes. In some cases, the hammertoes can also alter your gait as you consciously or unconsciously make changes to the way you walk in order to avoid toe pain or keep your shoes on your feet. Hammertoes worsen over time if they are left untreated. If you have hammertoes, please seek the care of a podiatrist.

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact Frank Henry, DPM of Marble Falls, TX. Our doctor will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Hammertoe

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that occurs due to an imbalance in the muscles, tendons, or ligaments that normally hold the toe straight. It can be caused by the type of shoes you wear, your foot structure, trauma, and certain disease processes.

Symptoms

  • Painful and/or difficult toe movement
  • Swelling
  • Joint stiffness
  • Calluses/Corns
  • Physical deformity

Risk Factors

  • Age – The risk of hammertoe increases with age
  • Sex – Women are more likely to have hammertoe compared to men
  • Toe Length – You are more likely to develop hammertoe if your second toe is longer than your big toe
  • Certain Diseases – Arthritis and diabetes may make you more likely to develop hammertoe

Treatment

If you have hammertoe, you should change into a more comfortable shoe that provides enough room for your toes. Exercises such as picking up marbles may strengthen and stretch your toe muscles. Nevertheless, it is important to seek assistance from a podiatrist in order to determine the severity of your hammertoe and see which treatment option will work best for you.
