Simple Methods That Can Maintain Healthy Feet

The feet carry the weight of the body and undergo extreme pressure during any given day. When everyday foot care is practiced, the feet can look and feel healthy, and there are simple methods that can accomplish this. It begins with washing and drying the feet daily, followed by applying a good moisturizer on them. It is a good practice to trim the nails weekly, and this is properly done by cutting them straight across instead of curved. Soaking the feet in warm water at the end of the day is not only relaxing for the overall body, but beneficial for the skin, which can become softer. It may make it easier to remove dead skin by using a pumice stone. It is suggested that shoes are the right size, and fit comfortably, as this may help to prevent unwanted corns, bunions, or hammertoes from developing. If you would like additional information about various foot care techniques to implement for better feeling feet, please consult with a podiatrist.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

Medical Conditions That May Lead To Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

The nerve that is located inside the tarsal tunnel is called the posterior tibial nerve. The tarsal tunnel is a narrow passageway that is found inside the ankle. It is held in place by soft tissue and bone, and this nerve can become compressed and irritated due to consistent pressure. It can also happen from medical conditions such as flat feet, diabetes, or arthritis which may cause this nerve to become irritated and inflamed. This is referred to as tarsal tunnel syndrome. Patients may experience a numbing or burning sensation and there may be shooting pain on the inside of the ankle. In severe cases, the pain may radiate to the heel, arch, and toes. Mild relief may be found when the affected foot is frequently rested and specific stretches are performed. These can include standing on the toes while using a chair for support and lifting the heels off of the floor. This is most effective when several sets are completed with a short rest period in between. If you think you may have tarsal tunnel syndrome, it is strongly urged that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can accurately diagnose and treat this condition.

Tarsal tunnel syndrome can be very uncomfortable to live with. If you are experiencing tarsal tunnel syndrome, contact Frank Henry, DPM of Marble Falls, TX. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome, which can also be called tibial nerve dysfunction, is an uncommon condition of misfiring peripheral nerves in the foot. The tibial nerve is the peripheral nerve in the leg responsible for sensation and movement of the foot and calf muscles. In tarsal tunnel syndrome, the tibial nerve is damaged, causing problems with movement and feeling in the foot of the affected leg.

Common Cause of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Involves pressure or an injury, direct pressure on the tibial nerve for an extended period of time, sometimes caused by other body structures close by or near the knee.
  • Diseases that damage nerves, including diabetes, may cause tarsal tunnel syndrome.
  • At times, tarsal tunnel syndrome can appear without an obvious cause in some cases.

The Effects of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Different sensations, an afflicted person may experience pain, tingling, burning or other unusual sensations in the foot of the affected leg.
  • The foot muscles, toes and ankle become weaker, and curling your toes or flexing your foot can become difficult.
  • If condition worsens, infections and ulcers may develop on the foot that is experiencing the syndrome.

A physical exam of the leg can help identify the presence of tarsal tunnel syndrome. Medical tests, such as a nerve biopsy, are also used to diagnose the condition. Patients may receive physical therapy and prescriptive medication. In extreme cases, some may require surgery.

Serious Foot Conditions Caused By Diabetes

Having diabetes can lead to a number of foot problems, mainly as the result of nerve damage and poor circulation. Nerve damage, also known as neuropathy, is brought on by long-term high blood sugar levels and renders the feet numb. Poor circulation, resulting from constricted blood vessels to the lower extremities, lowers the feet’s ability to heal from cuts, sores, and other conditions. It also lowers the body’s ability to fight off infection. These two factors put a diabetic at risk of painful and often serious complications, such as foot ulcers, that if ignored can lead to gangrene and worse. For that reason, it is suggested that diabetics check their feet daily for sores, bruises, cuts, or cracks in the skin. Regular visits to a podiatrist are essential for those with diabetes, especially if an infection has occurred. The careful monitoring of the health of the feet by a podiatrist can help a diabetic avoid conditions that could cause the loss of a limb or even a life.

Limb salvage can be an effective way in preventing the need for limb amputation. If you have diabetes, cancer, or any other condition that could lead to foot amputation if left unchecked, consult with Frank Henry, DPM from Marble Falls, TX. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

What Is Limb Salvage?

Limb salvage is the attempt of saving a limb, such as the foot from amputation. Podiatrists also try to make sure that there is enough function in the foot after the salvage that it is still usable. Diabetes is the number one cause of non-traumatic amputations in the United States. Those with diabetes experience poor blood circulation, which prevents proper healing of an ulcer. If the ulcer is left uncheck, it could become infected, which could result in the need for amputation.

However, there are other causes as well, such as cancer and traumatic injury. Links between higher mortality rates and amputation have been found. This translates into higher healthcare costs, and a reduced quality of life and mobility for amputees. Podiatrists have attempted to increase the prevalence of limb salvage in an attempt to solve these issues.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Limb salvage teams have grown in recent years that utilize a number of different treatments to save the infected limb. This includes podiatrists that specialize in wound care, rehabilitation, orthotics, and surgery. Through a combination of these methods, limb salvage has been found to be an effective treatment for infected limbs, and as an alternative to amputation. Podiatrists will first evaluate the potential for limb salvage and determine if the limb can be saved or must be amputated.

Foot Blisters From Running

Runners can easily develop blisters on their toes, soles, insides of their feet, and heels. Blisters are liquid-filled pockets of skin that can develop on the feet from a combination of heat, friction, and sweat. Common causes of foot blisters are poorly fitting shoes, socks that do not sufficiently protect the feet, and sweaty feet. To prevent blisters while running, wear well-fitted shoes that do not allow the foot to rub against the inside of the shoe. Break in new running shoes slowly until you know they are comfortable. When purchasing running shoes, shop for them later in the day when feet are at their largest, and wear socks you plan to wear while running. Measure both feet and buy shoes that correspond to the biggest size foot. If inserts are needed, make sure to put them in the shoes you plan to buy so you know they fit well, and you will maintain comfort. Socks worn while running should be clean and made of breathable material. Compression socks can help with circulation, toe socks can reduce friction between toes, and padded socks can help cushion the foot during runs. If a blister develops, do not pop it. Cover it with an adhesive bandage and allow it to heal. If your blister persists or worsens, contact a podiatrist who can help with treatment and provide more ideas for prevention.

Blisters are prone to making everyday activities extremely uncomfortable. If your feet are hurting, contact Frank Henry, DPM of Marble Falls, TX. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters develop as a result of constantly wearing tight or ill-fitting footwear. This happens due to the constant rubbing from the shoe, which can often lead to pain.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

How Do Blisters Form?

Blisters on the feet are often the result of constant friction of skin and material, usually by shoe rubbing. Walking in sandals, boots, or shoes that don’t fit properly for long periods of time can result in a blister. Having consistent foot moisture and humidity can easily lead to blister formation.

Prevention & Treatment

It is important to properly care for the affected area in order to prevent infection and ease the pain. Do not lance the blister and use a Band-Aid to provide pain relief. Also, be sure to keep your feet dry and wear proper fitting shoes. If you see blood or pus in a blister, seek assistance from a podiatrist.

Is Morton’s Neuroma Painful?

An inflamed nerve found between the third and fourth toes is indicative of Morton’s neuroma. It is a benign condition, despite it causing severe pain and discomfort. Women who frequently wear high heels may be afflicted with Morton’s neuroma and medical attention is often sought for pain relief. The pain comes from an irritated nerve that gradually becomes compressed, which can affect the entire foot. There may be existing medical conditions that lead to the development of Morton's neuroma. Are You Suffering From Nerve Damage?

Neuropathy is a condition that can lead to numbness or loss of sensation in the feet, but it can also cause pain. This condition is more likely to develop for those who are diabetic, obese, or with high blood pressure.

Two Methods That Can Determine Shoe Size

Wearing shoes that fit correctly is crucial in maintaining overall comfort while completing daily activities. Many people will try on several pairs of shoes before finding a perfect fit. It is beneficial to properly measure your feet prior to buying shoes, and this can be done by two different methods. Most shoe stores have a Brannock device, and this is generally effective in determining the correct shoe size. If this is unavailable, the foot can be measured while standing on a piece of paper. When the shoes and socks have been removed and the foot is lying flat on the floor, the foot can be traced. The results of the measurement may be more accurate when the foot is traced by someone else. Research has shown it is beneficial to purchase shoes at the end of the day when the feet are at their largest. Additionally, wearing the socks that would be worn with the intended shoes may help to ensure a proper fit. If you have questions and would like more information about how to find out your shoe size, please confer with a podiatrist.

It is important to find shoes that fit you properly in order to avoid a variety of different foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact Frank Henry, DPM from Marble Falls, TX. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Proper Shoe Fitting

Shoes have many different functions. They cushion our body weight, protect our feet, and allow us to safely play sports. You should always make sure that the shoes you wear fit you properly in order to avoid injuries and deformities such as: bunions, corns, calluses, hammertoes, plantar fasciitis, stress fractures, and more. It is important to note that although a certain pair of shoes might be a great fit for someone else, that doesn’t mean they will be a great fit for you. This is why you should always try on shoes before buying them to make sure they are worth the investment. Typically, shoes need to be replaced ever six months to one year of regular use.

Tips for Proper Shoe Fitting

  • Select a shoe that is shaped like your foot
  • Don’t buy shoes that fit too tight, expecting them to stretch to fit
  • Make sure there is enough space (3/8” to ½”) for your longest toe at the end of each shoe when you are standing up
  • Walk in the shoes to make sure they fit and feel right
  • Don’t select shoes by the size marked inside the shoe, but by how the shoe fits your foot

The shoes you buy should always feel as good as they look. Shoes that fit properly will last longer, feel better, and improve your way of life each day.

Common Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain takes many forms, but its main cause is overuse from repetitive activity. The most common forms of heel pain are plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and arthritis. If you experience sudden or severe heel pain from an accident or injury, it is recommended to see a podiatrist immediately. Other causes of heel pain include blisters, corns, bursitis, and stress fractures. One way to prevent heel pain is by reducing the stress on the feet when exercising. It is a good idea to stretch and do warm-up exercises before engaging in vigorous activities that can put stress on the heel. Ignoring heel pain is not a good idea, because it can lead to overcompensation and changes of gait. This may then begin to affect other body parts and lead to even more serious problems. If you are experiencing heel pain on a regular basis, or for longer periods of time, please visit a podiatrist for a thorough examination.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact Frank Henry, DPM of Marble Falls, TX. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.
